Whether FAQs

What does Whether do?

Whether will tell you how long you're able to run before it becomes dangerous based on the weather.

What devices are supported?

Currently only the desktop versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari are supported. I'm hoping to add mobile support soon!

Why would I use Whether instead of just checking the weather?

Whether is the best tool that I've found to tie the amount of time you're outside with different possible medical issues.

What weather factors does Whether consider?

The app takes into account UV index, windspeed, windchill, heat index, and the presence of thunderstorms to determine the optimal maximum running duration for your specific location. It attempts to solve for conditions like sunburn, frostbite, and heat exhaustion (hyperthermia). It will also tell you not to run if there are thunderstorms present in your area currently or if windspeeds are high enough to warrant a High or Extreme threat to life or property based on the NWS chart here.

Why did you create Whether?

I made Whether for a first project in JavaScript, as well as out of necessity. Being a runner in a hot climate, I wanted to make sure that I didn't get heat related injuries or illness. I then expanded to the other conditions listed as they were the more important ones for me.

What assumptions does Whether make?

That you're generally healthy, don't have any particular susceptibility to thermal injuries and are properly dressed for the climate.

Why does the app ask my name?

Ehh that's just a stupid little thing to personalize the greeting for my friends. You can submit with no name by just using a space.

Why does it ask my run speed?

This is to help estimate the windchill. As you move faster you're in effect experiencing higher windspeeds than those calculated by the NWS windchill calculation. This is to help account for this difference. It doesn't change the overall condition very much however, so if you're unsure just put a 3 for the run speed field.

Why does it ask if there's a lot of snow on the ground?

Snow on the ground has the potential to increase the UV by 50-90%.

Why does the app ask for my skin type?

Your Fitzpatrick skin type (or phototype) describes a way to classify the skin by its reaction to exposure to sunlight. It's set between 1 (easily burns) to 6 (very rarely burns).

Is the data I send stored anywhere?

No. I don't use or store any data.
